A Morphologi G3-ID particle characterization system from Malvern Instruments is opening cutting-edge research opportunities in environmental science at the School of Science, Environment and Engineering, Southern Cross University (SCU), in Australia. The Morphologi G3-ID, which is sold and supported in Australia by ATA Scientific, combines automated particle imaging with Raman spectroscopy to deliver particle size, morphology and chemical identification of particles within a dispersion. The technique is helping users to better understand the composition and behavior of natural particles within the environment and is generating substantial cost and efficiency savings in areas that previously relied on manual microscopy.

Suspension sorcery – demystifying Krieger-Dougherty

Many of the products we use in daily life, such as medicines, topical creams, processed foods and drinks and paints, are suspensions constituted of particles suspended in a continuous liquid phase. Tailoring the performance of a suspension product is therefore a routine goal for product formulators throughout industry. Too often, however, this task can seem like a bit of a black art.

Clearly there are two sets of properties to ‘tinker’ with when it comes to hitting formulation target – those of the continuous phase and those of the particles. The difficulty faced by many is how to ‘tinker’ in a productive way, and systematically move towards a better product. The Krieger-Dougherty (K-D) equation is a model that holds some of the answers.
